From Handwritten Form to Liability Opinion in Under 60 Seconds

A European motor insurer went from 20-minute manual processing per accident statement to instant, structured data with a liability opinion — without replacing a single handler.

Context

Every motor claim starts the same way: a handwritten accident statement arrives — photographed at an angle, filled in by two drivers at the side of a road, with rushed handwriting and incomplete information.

Someone reads it, interprets the sketch, extracts the data, determines liability, enters it into the system. Ten to twenty-five minutes per claim. Tens of thousands of times per year. Mysa automated the entire process. The handler's role shifted from data entry to decision confirmation.

Three things made this deployment possible — and they reflect the same pattern we see across every motor insurer we work with:

a.The form is the same everywhere. Twenty-one countries use the European Accident Statement. The structure is identical — two sides, checkboxes, a sketch, descriptions, signatures. This means a model trained on Portuguese forms can be adapted to French, Spanish, Italian, or Turkish forms without starting from scratch.
b.Liability is rules-based, not subjective. The IDS Convention defines hundreds of liability scenarios based on the circumstances declared by both drivers. If someone checks "was reversing" and the other checks "was stationary," the outcome is deterministic. The challenge is extracting the right inputs from messy handwriting — not the reasoning itself.
c.The sketch is the hardest part — and the most valuable. Every insurer we speak to says the same thing: reading the sketch is where handlers spend the most time and make the most errors. It's also where the real value is, because the sketch often contradicts what people wrote in the checkboxes or descriptions. Catching those contradictions early saves money.

Approach

Mysa reads the accident statement field by field — names, policy numbers, plates, dates, addresses, damage descriptions, checkboxes, signatures. On handwritten forms, we achieve 94% accuracy. On digital or printed forms, near 100%. But extraction is just the first layer.

The real value is in reasoning. We cross-reference the sketch interpretation against three independent sources: the checkboxes (section 12), the damage marks (section 10), and the written descriptions (section 14 and page two). When all three agree, we emit a liability opinion with high confidence. When they disagree, we flag it — because that's where fraud hides, where errors compound, and where your handlers should focus their time.

When documents are incomplete — a missing driving licence, an unsigned form, a blurry photo — Mysa automatically contacts the claimant via WhatsApp, email, or portal to collect the missing information. By the time a handler opens the file, it's complete.

1.Backtest (1 week): We process a batch of your historical claims — redacted or anonymised — and return the full results. You compare our extraction and liability opinions against what your handlers decided. No integration required.
2.Pilot (4–8 weeks): A Mysa engineer embeds with your team. We connect to your claims system, adapt the models to your document corpus, and run live claims through the pipeline in parallel with your existing process.
3.Production: Your handlers review Mysa's output instead of building it from scratch. Every correction feeds back into the model. Accuracy improves with volume.

Impact

Claims that took 20 minutes now take under 60 seconds to extract and under 2 minutes for a handler to confirm. With liability opinions at the moment of FNOL, the insurer proposes settlement options — cash-and-go, direct repair, total loss — within minutes. Missing documents, which previously stalled claims for days, are chased automatically. Handlers assess and decide. They no longer read and type.

We tried building this internally and with consultancies. Nobody could read the handwriting reliably, let alone interpret the sketch. Mysa is the first solution that actually works end-to-end on the accident statement.
